How to allow communication to Novell NetWare services

Communication with Novell NetWare services is disabled by default in AVG Firewall configuration.

In order to communicate with Novell server, configuration needs to be changed. Please use the following steps:

  • Make sure that you are logged into the computer as Administrater or user with administrative privileges (see FAQ 2521 for detailed description).
  • Open AVG (either by double clicking on the AVG icon on desktop or from Start -> Programs -> AVG 9.0 -> AVG User Interface)
  • Select the Firewall settings option in the Tools menu.
  • In the opened window select the profile you are using under the Profiles branch. Then, under the profile (e.g. Computer in domain) select the System Services option.
  • In the list on the right side change the action for Novell Netware from Block all to Allow for all or Allow for safe (depending on the location of your Novell server). To do this, click on the current action (e.g. Block All) and select new one from the opened menu. This should allow you to log into a Novell network.
  • If you need to use any other system services with your Novell server (e.g. SSDP & UPnP or MS Printer and File Sharing) and the firewall is not running with Computer in domain profile,  they might still be unavailable. In such case change their action this way:
    • If the profile is set to Small home or office network and your Novell server is not located in safe network, set the action of required system services to Allow for all.
    • If the firewall profile is set to Directly connected to the Internet, change the action of required system services from Block all to Allow for all or Allow for safe (depending on the location of your Novell server).
  • Confirm the new setting by pressing the OK button
  • Restart the computer and log in to the network using Novell.

How to configure AVG Firewall to allow VPN connection

The AVG Firewall configuration to allow a VPN connection is based on the used VPN solution. In case of Microsoft VPN connection, please refer to FAQ 2161.

When using some other VPN solution, the rules to be allowed in AVG Firewall are based on the type of VPN connection. There are three rules in AVG Firewall related to VPN communication:

  • ESP protocol
  • GRE protocol
  • PPTP VPN

In order to allow the VPN connection you are using, please proceed as follows:

  1. Open AVG -> menu Tools -> Firewall settings.
  2. Expand Profiles -> <your profile> -> System services.
  3. Allow rules GRE protocol and PPTP VPN (select each rule and in the Action column select Allow for all).
  4. Save the Firewall settings and check whether it is possible to connect to the VPN server.
  5. In case the connection is blocked, Block rules GRE protocol and PPTP VPN, and Allow for all rules ESP protocol.
  6. Save the Firewall settings and check whether it is possible to connect to the VPN server.

In case the VPN connection cannot be established, please contact our technical support using the option in AVG menu Tools -> Get Help Online.
