License and Activation
License number in AVG trial version is expired or missing
If you are installing a trial version of some of the AVG products and the pre-filled license number is rejected during the installation, or there is no trial number pre-filled, the issue is caused by one of the following reasons:
- You had an AVG trial version on your computer recently, and now the license reports to be expired
The AVG trial license is valid for 30 days, starting on the day you installed first AVG product. This means that if you trialed e.g. AVG Internet Security for 20 days and now you install AVG Anti-Virus trial version, the license will be valid for 10 days.
After the 30 day trial period, it will not be possible to install an AVG trial version again. - When you try to install a trial version of AVG, no license number is filled in
Only AVG installation files marked as Trial are supplied with a predefined license number. These trial packages can be downloaded in the Trial section.
An exception are AVG Business Edition trial versions. In case you wish to try any of the AVG network solutions, registration has to be completed prior the download, that will suply you with 30-day trial license number. The Business Edition trial versions are available in the Download section.
How to transfer license number to the new computer
2. On the new computer please proceed as follows:
- Download the latest installation package of the AVG program:
- Click the AVG for Windowslink:
- If unsure which file is suitable for your system, get the AVG Download Manager file
- If you wish to use the file for installation on a computer without Internet connection, use the 32bit or 64bit installer file (if unsure, choose 32bit)
- When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the Internet, but click Save button and choose location where installation file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
- Reboot your computer.
- Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG...) and launch the installation by double-clicking on it.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Enter your license number when you are asked (we recommend that you use copy&paste method to enter this license number into the installation form).
- If AVG asks you for a computer restart, please do so.

I didn't receive my license number after registering the sales number
The license number is sent to the e-mail address used in the registration form immediately after the registration process. If you didn't receive any e-mail, there are several possible reasons:
- The e-mail has not been sent, the registration process was not completed correctly
Please try to register your AVG once again via the Registration form. - You are using some spam filter
The e-mail has been probably filtered by an anti-spam control on your computer or on the mail server. Please contact your system administrator to solve this. - E-mail address has not been entered correctly
Your e-mail address has not been entered correctly into the registration form so it is not possible to deliver the e-mail. In this case please contact AVG Customer Services.
License number is not valid
It is possible that the AVG License Number was not entered correctly. Please compare the license key you have entered with the one you have received from AVG. However, we recommend that you use the Copy & Paste method as described in FAQ 2010 to insert your license number correctly, as this will avoid mistakes.
Also please make sure that:
- the license number you are entering is complete (not truncated), as described in FAQ 2164; and
- you are using or installing the latest AVG program version; the latest installation package is available at the AVG downloads site.
The end of the license period is approaching, where do I obtain a new license number?
A new license number will be sent when we receive a customer order by post or by e-mail. You can also renew your license number via the Upgrade Center or it is possible to contact your AVG distributor. The other possibility is to use direct link to our upgrade center that will appear approximately 30 days before your license expiration in the main AVG User Interface.

How can I extend the license period with a new license number?
If the end of the license period is approaching, and you have received your new license number, please follow these steps to extend the license period:
- Launch the AVG (double-click on the AVG icon on your desktop).
- Double-click the License component and select the Activate (or Re-activate) button.
- Enter your new license number into the next dialogue and confirm.
To enter the license number correctly we recommend you to use the Copy & Paste method.
License number is incomplete in AVG
After you enter the license or sales number into AVG during installation or activation and it is accepted, your AVG is correctly licensed. The number you used for activation is however never shown complete anywhere in AVG - the last group of four characters is hidden. This is due to security reasons, to prevent an unauthorized person to use your license just by writing it down from your AVG program.
If you need to reinstall AVG, or you are installing e.g. AVG Internet Security 3-pack edition on all three computers, it is needed to always enter the full license number that was provided to you upon purchase or registration. The short license number taken directly from AVG will not be accepted.
The short license number is on the other hand sufficient for your authentication when contacting AVG Customer Services, and for any common tasks related to your product.
How to display/copy the license number?
The license number can be found in AVG and copied as follows:
- Run AVG.
- Double-click the License component.
- Your AVG License Number is shown in the middle section of the screen in AVG.
- Right-click with your mouse on the AVG License Number and from the context menu select Copy license number option to store the AVG License Number to the clipboard.
- Then enter the number into the text field using CTRL+V shortcut, or right-click into the text filed and select Paste.
Note: In case of rewriting this license
number manually, please be careful to not confuse "1" (one) and "I"
(India), "5" (five) and "S" (Sierra), "8" (eight) and "B" (Bravo).
Signs "0" (zero) and "O" (Oscar) are not significant, both can be used.
How do I activate my current AVG installation with the new (renewed) AVG License Number?
Please follow the steps below to activate your AVG 9.0 by entering your newly purchased AVG License Number:
- Run AVG 9.0 by clicking on the AVG icon on your desktop or in your system tray bar.
- From the Help drop-down menu select Reactivate.
- Enter your newly purchased AVG License Number in the License Number field and click on Activate.
To enter the AVG License Number correctly, we recommend that you use the Copy & Paste method.
What is the difference between AVG Sales Number and AVG License Number?
When you purchase an AVG product, you will be supplied with either AVG Sales Number or AVG License Number.
If you have been supplied with AVG License Number
then you must install your product (using the AVG License Number)
immediately. This will allow you to enjoy the full license period.
If you have been supplied with AVG Sales Number, there is no time limit on installing the product. Upon installation of your product using AVG Sales Number, a 30-day period begins during which the AVG Sales Number must be registered. Upon registration, the AVG License Number (with 1 or 2-year license period) will be sent to your registered email account. Then you will have to activate your AVG installation with the newly received AVG License Number. It can be easily done by following these steps:
- Run AVG by clicking on the AVG icon on your desktop or in your system tray bar.
- From the Help drop-down menu select Reactivate.
- Enter your license number in the AVG License Number field and click on Activate.
- Please use the copy and paste method instead of typing the AVG License Number to avoid any possible mistakes.
In the event when you have both AVG Sales Number and AVG License Number, please use the AVG License Number.
Also remember to print out and save your AVG License Number for a future reference.
I have already registered, but I still receive a message that forces me to register. What should I do?
The problem is probably caused by the fact that you are still using the AVG Sales Number, which is valid for 30 days only.
Please activate your current AVG product on your computer using the that you obtained after the registration:
- Run AVG by clicking on the AVG icon on your desktop or in your system tray bar.
- From the Help drop-down menu select Reactivate.
- Enter your license number in the License Number field and click on Activate.
- Please use the copy and paste method instead of typing the AVG License Number to avoid any possible mistakes.
My AVG License Number does not work (is invalid/expired). What should I do?
Please first check:
- Whether you have downloaded and installed the correct edition of AVG software that you purchased.
- If you have the correct date/year set up in your system. System date can be checked this way.
- If you have entered the AVG License Number correctly by using the Copy and Paste method.
If you are still experiencing problems, please contact AVG Customer Services.
My Trial license ran out before the end of its 30 day period. What happened?
If the AVG Trial version is displaying that it has already expired, the AVG Trial program was probably installed on the computer before, or the system date has changed since installing AVG.
We suggest you check your system date. System date can be checked this way.
