Error in event log: Unexpected error 0x8004010f occurred in "EcVirusScanOneMessage"

This fault of type “Warning” doesn’t come directly from AVG, but from Exchange. It is stating that AVG is trying to get a variable which isn’t in the message. By the specification the variable should be there, therefore AVG is trying to pass it. This fault will not stop AVG working correctly. (You can still see in the log file that the e-mails are being scanned).

The only option to get rid of this message is to decrease the level of logging for Exchange/Systems/VirusScan (can be set in Exchange System Manager).

How to install AVG on an Email Server

Installation of the AVG program on an Email server does not differ much from the client's installation. However, below you can find some specificities of such AVG installation along with the general recommendations.

1. Supported Email servers:
AVG program can filter your e-mails on the following Email servers:

  • AVG for MS Exchange 2000/2003 Server
    - MS Exchange 2000 Server (with Service Pack 1 or higher), and MS Exchange 2003 Server versions.
    - Note: for Exchange 2000 Server - Service Pack 1 (or higher) needs to be applied before you can use the AVG engine; AVG for MS Exchange 2000/2003 Server uses the VSAPI 2.0 (or 2.5 with Exchange 2003 Server) application interface which is covered in this Service Pack.
  • AVG for MS Exchange 2007/2010 Server
    - MS Exchange 2007/2010 Server version
  • AVG for Kerio MailServer
    - Kerio MailServer 6.7.2 and higher

2. General information:
The following components are not designed to operate on Email servers: Online Shield, AVG LinkScanner, AVG Firewall, Personal E-mail Scanner.

  • AVG Online Shield
    • This component affects all HTTP, HTTPS and PROXY communication, since it scans communication on all respective ports/sockets. Component was not designed nor tested on servers and may affect some specific server's communication. Its installation is not recommended.
  • AVG LinkScanner
    • This component affects communication in almost the same way as the previously mentioned AVG Online Shield and was not designed to be used in server environment.
  • AVG Personal E-mail Scanner
    • The Personal E-mail Scanner captures and scans all communication on ports 110 and 25 (POP3 and SMTP) by default. This component was not tested nor designed for servers. Its installation may cause some issues while processing of e-mails on your email server.
  • AVG Firewall
    • AVG Firewall was not designed for the server's solutions same as the components mentioned above.

These components will not be installed on Email server by default.

3. Installation
To install AVG E-mail Server Edition on MS Exchange server, it is only needed to download and run the AVG E-mail Server Edition installation package from our website, and follow the instructions. If MS Exchange is detected during the installation, the appropriate plugin will be installed automatically. Please note that restart of Store will be required.

4. After the installation
It is recommended that you add the path to the folder where e-mail attachments are saved to the AVG Resident Shield excludes tab (AVG -> Resident Shield -> Manage exceptions).

If you use AVG Remote Administration, please note that you have to set it up in AVGAdmin Console as well.

List of folders which are recommended to be excluded from AVG scanning on MS Exchange server is available in FAQ 2021.

Upgrade from AVG 8.x to 9.0 on your e-mail server

When upgrading AVG 8.5 to AVG 9.0 version on the e-mail server, the following steps needs to be taken:

1. Uninstall old e-mail server plugins

As the AVG 8.5 plugins are installed separately, they need to be uninstalled before starting installation of AVG 9. During the uninstallation process the information store restart is needed.

  • Exchange plugin - run the setupes.exe with uninstall parameter from folder where plugin was installed.
    • e.g. C:\AVG4ES2K\setupes.exe /uninstall
  • Lotus Domino/Notes plugin - run the setupln.exe with uninstall parameter from folder where plugin was installed
    • e.g. C:\AVG4LN\setupln.exe /uninstall

2. Install AVG 9.0

It is not necessary to uninstall old AVG prior to AVG 9.0 installation. It will be done automatically. Also, all necessary plugins are part of the AVG 9.0 installation file and will be installed automatically.

  • Download the latest installation file from Download section of our web.
  • When prompted, do not open the file directly from the internet. Save it on your computer (e.g. in your Desktop folder)
  • Once downloaded, double click the installation file.
  • Follow the installation wizard and finish installation.

Possible slowdown of mailbox backup when VSAPI plugin is used

When using a backup software on Exchange server with the AVG VSAPI plugin, slowdown may appear. This is caused by Exchange calling anti-virus scanner to scan files as they are being accessed by the backup software.

To prevent such "conflict", you need to disable anti-virus within Exchange for the time of backup and enable it when backup is finished.

It is possible to do so manually using the AVG program (by disabling the EMS (VSAPI) component). However some applications (e.g. Veritas Backup Exec software) allows user to specify pre and post backup scripts. These scripts can disable/enable the VSAPI plugin automatically when executed.

Below, you can find simple VBS scripts and the same scripts compiled to EXE format as Veritas Backup Exec does not support VBS scripts. They are valid for all Exchange versions and both 32 and 64 bit platforms:

After succesful download, extract the scripts from the ZIP archive and in settings of the backup software, specify them as pre-backup and post-backup scripts to be used.

AVG Resident Shield detects a virus in *.eml file

Emails which are sorted by SMTP are at first saved to virtual queue of incoming emails in C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue\ on the server and then moved to the store of MS Exchange server (here are finally scanned by AVG for Exchange).

If there are any infected messages in this folder, the AVG Resident Shield detects them. In this case Microsoft recommends that the folder is excluded from on-access scanning or disable the scanning of these file types. List of folders which are recommended to be excluded from AVG scanning is available in FAQ 2021.
