AVG 9.0 - conflicting applications
This is a list of applications that are known to be in conflict with one or more components in AVG 9.0:
Ashampoo Firewall FREE
Issue: It is not possible to update AVG even if all AVG processes are allowed in the firewall, error message "The connection with the update server failed" is displayed.
Solution: Uninstalling Ashampoo Firewall FREE is the only solution. Workarounds as editing AVG services properties are not safe and present a security breach (any intruder can take control of the service then or attack it from the interactive desktop).
Better File Rename
Issue: Older version of this application causes crash of Windows Explorer with active AVG 9.0 Shell Extension Test option, when user uses right-click.
Solution: Update the application from developers website.
BlueCoat K9 Web Protection
Issue: Internet connection might be blocked completely or partially. AVG Firewall might be blocking some of BlueCoat K9 features.
Solution: This issue occurs when both applications are running simultaneously. To ensure correct function of your AVG Firewall please uninstall the BlueCoat K9 Web Protection.
Eset Smart Security 4
Issue: Computer is slowed down or crashes repeatedly.
Solution: It is generally not recommended to use more security solutions on one system. They will compete for resources which may result in slowdown, crashes or in no protection at all. We recommend uninstalling Eset Smart Security 4 (see FAQ 2277 for remover application).
Microsoft Security Essentials
Issue: Computer is slowed down or crashes repeatedly.
Solution: It is generally not recommended to use more security solutions on one system. They will compete for resources which may result in slowdown, crashes or in no protection at all. We recommend uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials.
PC MACLAN
Issue: BSOD crash when browsing shared MAC folders using PC MACLAN software, caused by one of MACLAN components which is not compatible with AVG Resident Shield driver.
Solution: To eliminate the issue, it is necessary to uninstall the PC MACLAN application.
System Protect
Issue: AVG cannot be installed or is installed incorrectly
Solution: During the installation of AVG, turn off the System Protect. You may also need to create an exception for AVG later.
PC Tools Antivirus
Issue: Compatibility issues

Lock Folder XP
Issue: The computer crashes repeatedly.
Solution: We recommend to uninstall this application to solve this issue.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Issue: Full version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware contains resident part which causes operating system to freeze with active AVG Resident Shield.
Solution: This issue occurs when both components are running simultaneously. Please uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or disable its resident part.
What to do when the AVG installation fails
If you are installing AVG and the installation process fails, there are several steps you can take to install AVG successfully.
1. Make sure you are installing AVG under an account with Administrative rights
This step is vital for correct and successful installation, since AVG needs to copy some of its files into folders, which are not accessible by an account with User permissions. For information on how to check whether you are logged into Windows as a user with administrative rights, please check one of these FAQ topics (depending on your operating system):
2. Always use the latest AVG installation file
AVG program is being improved continuously, including the installer which is responsible for correct installation process. Moreover, using the latest installation package eliminates the need to download larger program and virus base updates immediately after installation. To download the up-to-date installation AVG 9.0 file, please visit the Download section of our website, choose your product and click the link "AVG for Windows".
3. Close all running programs, disable security applications
Before running the installation file, please close all unnecessary running programs and make sure that there is no security application which might interfere with the installation process. Typical examples of programs preventing successful AVG installation are anti-spyware utilities and registry monitors/cleaners, which are preventing access to Windows registry. AVG needs to be installed also into registry to allow the functionality and protection it was designed to offer.
4. Remove possible conflicting applications
If you are using an application which might be in conflict with AVG, please disable it or uninstall it completely before running the installation. In general, AVG may conflict with such application, that provides similar or same functionality as one of the AVG components. This is especially important for other programs with one or more of these features:
- real-time protection against viruses (same as AVG Resident Shield)
- monitoring or control of network traffic (same or similar to AVG Firewall)
- checking or filtering of e-mails (same or similar to AVG E-mail Scanner)
- checking of websites, web content filters (same or similar to AVG Online Shield)
5. Disable UAC (Windows Vista and Windows 7 only)
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, the function User Account Control may in some cases create a copy of specific AVG files in a virtual folder. This limits AVG functionality after the installation. The UAC function can be disabled in Windows Control Panel -> User accounts -> Turn User Account Control on or off -> uncheck "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" -> click OK button and restart the computer.
In case the installation is still unsuccessful after these steps were taken, please do not hesitate to contact our Technical Support using the web form. To provide us with the most complete information and thus help us provide you with a solution in the shortest possible time, please attach the AVG installation log files to your request:
- open Start -> Run or Search -> type "%tmp%" -> OK
- Please find the following files in the Explorer's window that will appear on the screen:
- avg9inst_XXXX-XX-XX_XX-XX.xml
- Davg9inst_XXXX-XX-XX_XX-XX.log
(where X represent the date and time of creation)
- Attach the files to your request

AVG installation informs about Roxio driver
The AVG installation process detects conflicting applications present on your computer. One of the applications that can affect the functionality of the AVG program is Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator. If an older version of this program is installed on your computer, the AVG installation process may display the following message:
Installer has detected that there is an outdated version of the program Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator, which contains a bug that (among others) can cause problems with AVG 9.0.
To solve this issue, we recommend that you visit this Roxio webpage, which contains the latest update for the product. After updating, please run the AVG installation again; it should proceed correctly without the abovementioned warning. If you do not use Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator, you can uninstall it to make sure that the AVG installation will finish correctly.
If you have any issues updating or uninstalling your Roxio software or the related cdr4_2K.sys driver, please contact Roxio Technical Support.
Please note: The driver Cdr4_2k.sys, which is detected by AVG setup, was also distributed by Microsoft in Windows Media Player. If you do not have the Roxio software installed, we recommend that you download and install all available updates for Windows Media Player from the following website:
http://www.windowsupdate.com
It is possible to continue with the AVG installation even if you are not able to update or uninstall the mentioned Roxio driver. However, we strongly recommend that you either perform the suggested Roxio update or uninstall the program.
Windows Defender is automatically turned off during installation
This is important to prevent conflicts between AVG and Windows Defender. As they are both security applications, they will try to check files you are working with. Since they will do that at the same time, conflicts may arise. These can cause freezing, crashes or slowdown of computer. It is generally not recommend to use more than one security product on one computer.
